I've always loved and feared words.
All my life I've struggled to get what people really mean when they say something. With time, I've realized I can't be literal in my understanding, even though that's how my brain works. Irony, sarcasm, play on words… Even in movies or shows I'm not good at figuring it out.
But I still love words. I love metaphors. I love imagery. I love putting two contradictory words against each other to see how it sounds. I love when it's straight to the point. I love when, through art, I have to decode all the subtle meanings, giving a piece more richness.
That's why I wanted to explore text based art. That and because after a few years of painting intuitively and finding my style, something quite maximalist, I got bored and needed to explore again (thanks adhd…).
Thus, this series comes from my desire to simply share my thoughts on Life.
At times I'm literal. At times I'm figurative. At times I'm using puns. At times I'm rhyming. I'm not taking myself too seriously through it or, on the contrary, I'm being very explicit and literal and don't intend to hide anything beyond what I'm saying. I'm making statements. Some are political. I'm making jokes. I'm writing both in French, my mother tongue, and in English, the language of my ancestors. Sometimes mixing it up in the same sentence. I'm reinterpreting famous lines from movies or shows or songs to make a point. I'm playing with words. I'm owning them.
Most of all, I'm taking back control. The control I don't have when socializing. And though I know I can also be misinterpreted through my art, it doesn't scare me as much than in “real life”.
And, as always, I'm just having fun. Because, even if this series and actually most of my art is serious, it's mostly all about play and finding myself. That's also what this series is about!
